Mercedes To Abandon Greenwashing Projects To Re-Focus On Fossil-Fueled Cars

Mercedes-Benz, known for its sustainability rhetoric and debatable Eco Warrior stance, is shifting its focus away from EVs and back to bolstering and preserving its current range of internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid powertrains. The environmentally conscious—yet oxymoronic—company, that formed part of the Dieselgate cabal, is seemingly reverting to its origins as demand for electric cars fails to ignite.

The automaker had previously stated its readiness for 100 percent of sales to be all-electric by 2030. However, earlier this year, the CEO indicated a revised expectation: Mercedes-Benz now anticipates that only 50 percent of its sales will consist of electrified vehicles, including hybrids, by the end of the decade.

In a recent media interview, CEO Ola Kallenius revealed that Mercedes-Benz will allocate 14 billion euros ($15 billion) this year alone for its passenger cars.

The automaker is channelling these funds into upgrading factories, advancing research and development, and enhancing the drivetrain technology of its hybrid vehicles to ensure their relevance well into the next decade.

This suggests Mercedes’s intent to give the impression of developing electric cars. However, the company’s true intent is clear.

In their own words, Mercedes will devote substantially more resources than usual to revamping the combustion-engine variant of its flagship S-Class, slated to debut in mid-2026.

Kallenius underscored the company’s commitment to maintaining its engines at the pinnacle of technological advancement, highlighting the strategic imperative of sustaining its combustion engine business beyond 2027/28.
