It was just a couple of weeks ago when TopGear got the industry talking about a so-called ‘hypercar.’ It’s rumoured to be in development by Mercedes-AMG, with the article going as far to claim that it’s “a rumour no longer.” What’s so exciting about this new car? It’s allegedly going to be equipped with an F1 engine.Let’s look at this a little more in-depth. These rumours have come to light thanks to an unknown source who gave the information to TopGear at the Belgian F1 Grand Prix this year. We don’t know a whole lot about it at the moment, but there’s plenty of assumptions. This is what TopGear has to say about the car itself. “The Merc-AMG F1 road car will use a carbon-fibre monocoque, and feature a gullwing-style cockpit canopy,” it says. “The new road car could use up to three electric motors in addition to a bigger version of the F1 combustion engine.”UK-based motoring rag, Evo, reported the following; “Power is expected to be in the region of 1000bhp to 1500bhp, with 900bhp of that generated from the V6 turbo engine,” it says. And, taking it on the roads might leave you needing a ticket lawyer if you’re not careful with your speed! “Top speed is expected to be above 220mph, although road-tyre development will be a limiting factor.”“The team source also confirmed that the Mercedes hypercar will be powered by the 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine fitted to the current W07 F1 racer, which is driven by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.”A Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo car featured in the popular Gran Turismo video game series a few years ago. Whether this new car will share many similarities is yet to be determined. It would appear that they’re looking to go one further this with new idea if rumours are to be believed.
If you’re hoping to get your hands on one of these things, you might want to think again. Don’t expect production to go much above 50-100 cars. The price will probably be around 4,000,000 EUR.
It’s also crucial to mention that none of this has been officially confirmed by Mercedes-AMG at this moment. That said, it would make sense if the announcement becomes legit in the near future.
AMG’s 50th birthday will be marked next year, and they’ll want to embark on plenty of commemoration as a result. The AMG Hypercar is one of two projects that is believed to be in development for this special occasion.
So that’s all we know for now, and we don’t expect to hear a whole lot about it until next year. Still, the new barrage of rumours may just convince Mercedes-AMG to bring the announcement forward. Maybe, we’ll find out that the information isn’t quite as accurate as we thought? Only time will tell, but it’ll be fascinating to see how this story develops over the next few months.
